Cold-brewed tea is one of the easiest ways to create a refreshing drink bursting with flavor. By steeping tea leaves in cold water rather than hot, you get a smoother, naturally sweeter tea with less bitterness and fewer tannins. It's wonderfully refreshing, incredibly versatile, and easy to make.

Basic Cold-Brew Tea Recipe

  • 1 litre of cold, great-tasting water

  • 8–10 g loose-leaf tea

Add the tea to cold water in a jug or bottle. I recommend (especially if you make cold brewed for serving) to first wake up and "clean" the tea leaves in hot water (the temperature you would have used if you were to infuse the leaves hot). Discard this water after 2-3 seconds, then proceed with the cold brew. Refrigerate for 6–12 hours, depending on the tea type and how strong you like it. I would say 6 hours for the green and 8–10 hours for the white. The black tea between 8–12 hours, depending on the type of black tea you use. Strain, flavour if you like, and garnish to your taste. Ready to enjoy!

Ice is optional. I only put ice into cold brewed tea if the cubes are made from the tea itself. Otherwise, I find, the ice will dilute the flavours too much! 🌊😎

Three Cool Variations

White Tea + Elderflower & Peach

Cold-brew white tea and add a splash of elderflower squash to taste. Garnish with fresh peach slices and a few mint twigs for a delicate, floral summer refresher.

Green Tea + Lemon & Cucumber

Cold-brew green tea and stir in a little lemon squash. Add thin cucumber ribbons and a slice of fresh lime for a crisp, bright, and cooling drink.

Black Tea + Blackcurrant & Orange

Cold-brew black tea and add blackcurrant cordial to taste. Garnish with orange slices and a small sprig of rosemary for a rich, fruity drink with a subtle herbal note. A secret tip: at Långbrogård in Mölnbo - if you happen to be in the area or live close by - do not forget to purchase a few bottles of this extra fine blackcurrant cordial. This one is not heated above 40 °C, which means the taste is much fuller and richer, and the vitamins are preserved. Here you find Långbrogård on Instagram! - always worth a visit!

Why Cold Brew Tea?

  • More flavor: Slow extraction brings out deeper, delicate flavours.

  • Less tannin: A smoother, softer taste with reduced bitterness and astringency.

  • Easy peasy: Simply combine tea and water, refrigerate, and let time do the work.

Whether you prefer floral white tea, refreshing green tea, or bold black tea, cold brewing is a simple way to enjoy tea at its most vibrant and refreshing. Cold-brewed teas also make an excellent base for creative alcohol-free drinks.

The smooth, deep flavor and natural sweetness of cold-brewed teas pair beautifully with fruits, herbs, cordials, and sparkling water, making them ideal for refreshing mocktails. They are equally at home in a large summer punch bowl—what we in Sweden call bål—where guests can help themselves to a refreshing and flavorful tea-based drink throughout the day or evening.
